St. John's struggles to hold off Davidson

NEW YORK - JP Kuhlman had a perfect look from the top of the circle.

Davidson was down two. Kuhlman rose and launched a picturesque 3-pointer. A 3 would give the Wildcats the lead. They were going to pull the upset ... except the shot rimmed out.

St. John's topped Davidson 62-57 in the second game of the Holiday Festival at Madison Square Garden on Monday night.

The Wildcats (5-5) will play St. Francis (N.Y.) in today's consolation game. St. Francis was routed 92-61 by Northwestern.

Brendan McKillop led Davidson with 17 points, four rebounds and four assists. D.J. Kennedy led St. John's (6-3) with 17 points and 10 rebounds.

The game was the 17th meeting between the programs. Davidson trails the series 11-6 and has lost the past seven games. The last time the two schools played was December 29, 1990. St. John's won that one 83-65.

The game was marked by tough defense by both sides, highlighted by St. John's guard Paris Horne's block of a De'Mon Brooks dunk attempt at the first-half horn. The Wildcats shot 34 percent from the field and the Red Storm connected on 46.7 percent.

The physical defense led to ugly incidents involving Jake Cohen and St. John's center Dele Coker in the first half, and Clint Mann and St. John's forward Justin Brownlee and Cohen and Brownlee in the second half.

Cohen and Coker were charged with a double technical foul for unsportsmanlike conduct. The two got tangled up under the Davidson basket and fell to the court. It appeared that Coker might have stepped on Cohen, who responded by kicking at his calf.

Mann clothes-lined Brownlee on a fast break dunk attempt 4 minutes, 10 seconds into the second half. Mann was called for an intentional foul. Brownlee knocked Cohen to the ground with 6:48 remaining on a layup attempt.

Cohen lay on the court for a few minutes before being taken to the bench where he got treatment from the trainers. Brownlee was assessed an intentional foul. Cohen returned to the game at the 5:04 mark.

Davidson led 27-24 at halftime.
